Interview with
Dimitris Sgouros (2001) by Vita
"I don’t believe the development of a gifted
child is in any danger from something bestowed by nature. On the contrary,
nature blesses it so that it may be complete. Dangers emerge from a
resentful social environment, the envy of the mediocre, and a few
"experts" whose purpose it is to level everyone." - Dimitris Sgouros
At what age did you realise you had a special talent
for music? I can’t pinpoint a specific age, nor can I say that
I realised I had a talent for music. Just as I enjoyed playing with
different toys and spending my time doing a variety of activities, it
seems that the music I listened to and, more generally, sounds, had a
greater interest for me, to the point where I sought them out and devoted
more time to songs and music. Of course, this immediately drew my family’s
attention.
How do you experience your unique talent?
When a person devotes their life to that which they love and
have chosen to pursue without any hurry or pressure, according to their
particular temperament, then their course through life equates with their
pursuit because that is where they’ll find answers and via it will also
envision their future. In music, this feeling is complete, music is one
with me, and through that my other needs in life are met.
Who was
it that helped you from your immediate environment? First of
all, my parents and my brother, my teachers – those who recognised my
talent – and great musicians and co-workers I met outside of
Greece.
Do you feel that you missed out on anything in your
childhood? I have no gaps or shortfalls from my childhood
because I did what all kids do. In any case, I used music as a game at a
young age, one which was right up my street. But I discovered peace and
calm in music.
From your personal experience, what difficulties
and dangers do you believe a gifted child has to face? I don’t
believe the development of a gifted child is in any danger from something
bestowed by nature. On the contrary, nature blesses it so that it may be
complete. Dangers emerge from a resentful social environment, the envy of
the mediocre, and a few "experts" whose purpose it is to level everyone
out of sheer selfishness. A glance at the history of mankind easily
confirms this.
